Kindergarten at Westside Preparatory School

Kindergarten equips students for lifelong learning.   The warm, loving environment at Westside Kindergarten enables children to develop their curiosity and to explore, discover and create.  Our engaging and challenging curriculum aims to develop the whole child, balancing academic achievement with critical thinking, teamwork, imaginative problem solving, and compassion. 

Why full day?

Kindergarten at Westside Preparatory School runs on a full day basis.  Kindergarten hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to3pm.   At Kindergarten, children begin to discover the joy of learning.  A full day program provides the time to explore each subject area fully, allowing for deeper study of core skills, as well as the development of personal, social and co-operative skills.  Westside Kindergarten recognizes that play is an essential tool for learning in the early years.  The full day curriculum provides excellent opportunities for extended learning through play, using our developmentally appropriate resources.  

Curriculum

Kindergarten subjects are taught through hands-on, fun, multi-sensory projects. Our carefully-planned subject areas are comprehensive, structured and progressive.  Throughout the Kindergarten year, students gain experience in a wide range of areas, including science, French, fine arts, sports, and community.  Healthy living, interpersonal skills, numeracy and literacy are also integrated into all areas of the curriculum. 

Successful development of literacy and math skills is essential to early education.  A strong start in Kindergarten gives children the confidence and inspiration to build their skills throughout school and beyond.  The full day program ensures that all students can develop a secure foundation of knowledge in the four capacities of English language arts – speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as mathematical concepts of number, shape and pattern.   A substantial block of time is dedicated each day to specific literacy and math skills, using fun, interactive and engaging methods to progress learning.
